Chesapeake VA DentistDuring the month of October it’s almost impossible to stay away from sugar. It’s around every corner in the grocery store, your home, workplace, and schools. Every party, festival or candy dish is filled with candy corns, chewy caramels or sugary treat in the shape of a pumpkin, ghost or monster. The sugar monster is lurking around every corner waiting to tempt every member of your family.

Our dentists and professional staff at Midgette Family Dentistry want to encourage you to conquer the sugar monster this year by using a few small tricks to avoid the sugary treats.

Trick #1

Replace your “no” with a “yes.” Instead of constantly saying “no” to yourself and your kids this fall, why not find things you can say “yes” to? There are great sweet alternatives that will satisfy your cravings, but not harm your dental health. Reach for natural fruits such as strawberries, apples and grapes. You can even make a yummy treat of dark chocolate covered strawberries to enjoy. Dark chocolate has many benefits for your mouth and body!

Trick #2

Choose sugarless gum. According to the American Dental Association chewing gum for 20 minutes a day can actually help prevent cavities. You can read all about the benefits of chewing sugarless gum on the ADA’s website here. Make sure you look for gum that has the ADA seal of approval on it, and you can chew with confidence.

Trick #3

Book your appointment with Midgette Family Dentistry this fall. During our cleaning and checkup we will inspect your mouth for signs of tooth decay and also perform routine cleanings to ensure your entire family is on the right track for optimal dental health.
